There was a brief spell during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 season for Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Sharma in the games against Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad when he played a couple of blitzkrieg innings and helped Mumbai get over the line quite comfortably. At that point in the season, the tide promised to turn for Rohit, who had a quiet start to the IPL; however, after a bit, his form regressed again. In 13 games, he scored 329 runs at an average of 27.42 and a strike rate of 147.53 so far in the season.
Former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan opined that Rohit is looking disinterested. “He seems to be a bit disinterested; the motivation, the fire in the belly, has satiated. He has won almost everything, from winning the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy to retiring from Test cricket. Hence, to motivate yourself to play at this level of cricket every day is a very tough task,” Wassan said on Bails and Banter on the OTTplay app.
Rohit’s performances in the IPL for Mumbai have been on a downward curve for quite a few seasons. 2016 was the last time he managed to have a season where he averaged over 40s (44.45). “He’s not the Rohit Sharma of, say, three to four years ago. He’s at a stage in his career where he has to push himself every morning – train hard and be at his best – because things are slipping away for him. He’s still relying on his natural talent and instincts,” Sanjay Manjrekar observed during one of the shows on Jiostar.
After winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit has announced his retirement from the shortest version of the game.. Additionally, earlier during the IPL season, Rohit has called it a day in the red-ball format; however, he will continue to be part of the ODI setup. As a captain, Rohit has won five trophies for Mumbai Indians, A T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy for the Indian national side.
