Residents in Mumbai were in for an unexpected spectacle this week as the thunderous roar of Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets echoed across the city’s skyline.

The low-flying sorties, which caught the attention of many onlookers, were part of Exercise Trishul, a major tri-service military drill currently underway.

The ongoing drills involve the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force working together to sharpen joint operational skills and improve coordination across different terrains — on land, at sea, and in the air. Defence officials said the exercise demonstrates the armed forces’ readiness to respond swiftly and effectively to any challenge.

Social media soon lit up with clips of the Sukhoi jets flying low over the city. One such video, filmed by Instagram user @siddhant.rajadhyaksha, captured a jet soaring over Mumbai’s skyline with the caption: “Heard that thunder-roar over Mumbai? Here’s what’s really up."

According to the Ministry of Defence, Exercise Trishul embodies the spirit of “JAI" — Jointness, Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) and Innovation, underlining India’s focus on integration and indigenisation in defence preparedness.
