Heavy rain likely to continue in Kerala, red alert in force for two districts

The heavy rain that has been lashing Kerala is likely to continue with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) retaining the heavy forecast issued for various districts on Wednesday (May 28, 2025).

According to the latest weather update, a red alert has been in force for two districts – Kozhikode and Wayanad – for the day, warning of extreme heavy rainfall, and an orange alert for nine districts forecasting very heavy rainfall, except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha, where a yellow alert has been issued indicating isolated heavy rains.

Above-normal rains

Meanwhile, the long-range forecast of the IMD forecasts an above-normal season for Kerala this year, with the agency predicting around 108% rainfall for the State during this four-month season. The forecast also suggests surplus rain in most parts of the State in June as well. The average annual rainfall of Kerala is 2018.6 mm during the four-month season.

Lower Sholayar in Thrissur recorded the highest rainfall of 12 cm during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, followed by Vythiri in Wayanad (11 cm), Munnar in Idukki, Parambikulam in Palakkad, Angadipuram in Malappuram, and Vadakara in Kozhikode with 10 cm each.
