Hector Luis Garcia turned professional in December 2016 and quickly rose in boxing.

He reached his biggest moment on August 20, 2022, when he won the WBA super featherweight title by beating Roger Gutiérrez by unanimous decision. But things changed after that.

On January 7, 2023, in Washington, D.C., Garcia faced Gervonta Davis and was stopped in the ninth round. Later, on November 25, 2023, at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, he lost his title to Lamont Roach Jr. by split decision. These two losses ended his momentum.

Garcia explained in his retirement post: “After 20 years of running straight and still going, it’s hard to keep up. I’ve given my all in this sport. Over the last few years, I’ve fought against the best boxers. I leave this sport knowing I gave it my all.”Two days before announcing his retirement, Garcia shared old pictures and videos from his journey. Alongside them, he wrote: “Officially announcing my retirement.”Also Read: “It is a shortcut”: Serena Williams opens up on GLP 1 weight loss journey and 31 pound drop before US Open

Lamont Roach Jr. calls out Floyd Mayweather after Gervonta Davis chooses Jake Paul

While Hector Luis Garcia is saying goodbye, Lamont Roach Jr. is making noise of his own. After beating Garcia in 2023, Roach Jr. was waiting for a rematch with Gervonta Davis. A second fight was set for August 16, 2024, but no contract was signed. Davis instead surprised the boxing world by agreeing to fight YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in an exhibition at State Farm Arena in Atlanta on November 14, 2025.Frustrated, Roach Jr. turned to social media. He called out Davis’ old mentor, Floyd Mayweather, writing: “ Come on now, Floyd… set it up with me and you! We can run it, let’s see what you got left in that gas tank.” He followed it with another message: “[Floyd Mayweather]… nothing personal, champ, but let’s run it! I’ll show you why.”It is unlikely Mayweather will accept, but the bold callout keeps Lamont Roach Jr. in headlines, while Hector Luis Garcia ends his boxing story for good in front of his home crowd.
