Indian ace Lakshya Sen went down to Chinese shuttler Li Shi Feng in the final of the men’s singles event in the Hong Kong Open on Sunday as China completed a clean sweep of all the events in the tournament.

Feng got the better of the Indian 21-15, 21-12 in a game that lasted just over 45 minutes as China became the first country in the open era to complete a clean sweep of all the events in a tournament.

Earlier in the day, the Indian badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost to the Chinese pair Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang in the men’s doubles event. Weikeng and Chang came from a game down to clinch the title with a 19-21, 21-14, 21-17 victory over the celebrated Indian duo in the championship clash.

Satwik and Chirag won the opening game of the final 21-19 in thrilling fashion, clawing their way back from a couple of points down late in the set.

However, the Chinese pair equalized in the second game with a 21-14 win, pushing the match into a deciding third set. In the third set, Chang and Weikeng comfortably sealed the match with a 21-17 victory to claim the title.

Satwik and Chirag qualified for their first final since May 2024, when they won the Thailand Open. They reached the final after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Lin Bing-wei 21-17, 21-15 in just 38 minutes in their first meeting.

The only hurdle between them and the gold medal was the two-time Chinese sixth seeds Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, whom Satwik and Chirag had beaten in the last 16 at the World Championships.

However, the Chinese duo seemed to have learned from their previous mistakes, pushing the Indian duo all the way before conceding the opening game. They then responded strongly in the second set to level the match and finally clinched the crown with a win in the decisive third game.

The Indians put up a good fight, attempting to claw their way back to deuce despite being 6 points down in the final set. However, the Chinese pair held onto their lead and closed out the game to stand atop the podium in Hong Kong.
