Patna: In a case of honour killing in Purnia, a 27-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by her brother at their home in Madhubani police station area of Purnia district around 10pm on Monday over her relationship with a man.Victim Chhoti Kumari was shot twice — in arm, from where the bullet went on piercing her chest, and leg — by her brother Vikram Keshri. She was rushed to GMCH, Purnia, by her father Sudhir Kesari, but she succumbed to her injuries.According to police, the woman was in a relationship with her brother’s friend for over two years, which Vikram strongly opposed.The siblings had a heated argument on Monday night after the accused saw Chhoti speaking with her boyfriend over phone.
The brother as well as their mother tried to convince the woman not to speak to him, but to no avail. In a fit of rage, Vikram allegedly shot his sister, before fleeing the scene. The father was in the market when the incident took place.Upon receiving the information, the police rushed to the spot and sent her body for a postmortem examination. Two empty bullet shells were recovered from the spot. The forensic team was also called.
Jyoti Shankar, Purnia sadar subdivisional police officer (SDPO)-I, told this newspaper that an initial investigation suggests it was a case of honour killing. “The woman’s relationship with a man was opposed by her family. The accused has been absconding, and raids are underway for his arrest. Further investigation is going on in this case,” he said.
