A day after Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma met Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, the latter Saturday expressed hope that the points agreed upon in the tripartite Tiprasa Accord will soon be implemented.

The Tiprasa Accord – signed by the Centre, the state government and the Tipra Motha in March 2024 to solve issues relating to land rights, customary laws, linguistic, socio-economic and political rights of tribals based in Tripura – was touted to be implemented within six months, but not much has progressed in the last 20 months since the Accord was signed.

Speaking to reporters, CM Saha said, “I have seen him (Pradyot Kishore) give a statement to the media after the meeting yesterday. I’ll say the same thing… discussions were held on the tripartite agreement that was signed in Delhi. I hope issues flagged by the Tiprasa Accord will be solved soon.”

Asked about the state police’s recent refusal of permission for a Tipra Motha rally at Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala, Saha said the Motha postponed the rally and they could best comment on the issue.

On Friday, Pradyot Kishore had described his discussions with the chief minister as a “welcome step” in the direction of development.

Pradyot Kishore’s meeting with the CM came three days after the Tipra Motha founder floated a pan-regional forum with the stated aim of merging all regional parties in the Northeast. At the press conference where the announcement of the pan-regional forum was made, Pradyot Kishore was flanked by Meghalaya-based National People’s Party (NPP) supremo Conrad Sangma, among others.

Both the Tipra Motha and the NPP are allies of the BJP and are constituents of the saffron party-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).

Meanwhile, Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former minister Sudip Roy Barman Friday reacted to the meeting between Pradyot Kishore and Saha. The Opposition leader said the “real solutions” for the tripartite Tiprasa Accord have to be provided by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Central government.

In another development, CM Saha Saturday said the state government has taken a loan of Rs 1,400 crore from the World Bank to develop connectivity, electricity, water supply, health, and education in tribal areas.

He added that his government allocated over 40 per cent of funds in the 2025-26 budget for developing tribal-inhabited areas.

The chief minister said the saffron party-led government does not play politics with tribal people.
