Emma D'Arcy says 'Rhaenyra must prove she can rule like any man'

As hype builds for the third season of 'House of the Dragon', Emma D'Arcy has shared new insights into Rhaenyra Targaryen's journey and the challenges awaiting the character in the next chapter of the acclaimed fantasy drama.

The actor also discussed the show's interpretation of George R.R. Martin's source material and praised co-star Matt Smith's portrayal of Daemon Targaryen. The upcoming season is expected to further intensify the Dance of the Dragons, with political rivalries, personal conflicts and questions of leadership taking centre stage. According to Emma D'Arcy, Rhaenyra's struggle will extend beyond the battlefield as she continues to fight for recognition and authority.

Rhaenyra Targaryen faces new battles in season 3

Following the dramatic events of the previous season, Rhaenyra enters the next phase of the conflict as a ruler facing growing opposition. Talking to Hindustan Times, Emma D'Arcy explained that one of the character's biggest challenges will be confronting those who continue to doubt her right to govern.Discussing the broader themes surrounding the character, the actor said, “A way in which patriarchy preserves and consolidates male power is to prevent women from easily wielding power in the same way and condemning them for it.”

Emma D'Arcy noted that these ideas remain central to Rhaenyra's story as she attempts to establish herself as a capable leader during a time of crisis.

The struggle for acceptance continues

The actor revealed that Rhaenyra will spend much of the season trying to overcome perceptions that set her apart from her male counterparts.Explaining the character's position, Emma D'Arcy stated, “Something Rhaenyra has to reckon with is trying to right the campaign of othering.

She comes in as a ruling queen, and she has to find a way to declare to her male colleagues and counsel, as well as her subjects, that ‘I am the same as you. I have the same capacity to lead the realm as you’.”

Book and series offer different perspectives

'House of the Dragon' is adapted from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, which presents the history of House Targaryen through historical records and competing accounts.Emma D'Arcy pointed out that the television series approaches events differently by focusing on the emotional experiences of the characters.Reflecting on the adaptation process, the actor said, “That’s part of the interest of the show. There’s a lovely tension between the source material and getting to create this adaptation is that the source material is plotted history, while the show is told through the POV of this complex family.”

Emma D'Arcy praises Matt Smith's performance

The relationship between Rhaenyra and Daemon remains one of the most discussed aspects of the show. Fans have frequently praised the chemistry between D'Arcy and Matt Smith.Speaking about her co-star, Emma D'Arcy highlighted Smith's physical acting style and the energy he brings to Daemon.“There was a scene we did this season, and I got to watch Matt, who is an amazing physical performer, do some violence. The way Matt approaches it is allowing Daemon to be like a football hooligan. It is a much more poised presentation of violence. That’s probably why some of that thrill and charge is glamorous.”'House of the Dragon' season 3 is set to premiere on June 21 on HBO and expectations are high.
