The Thanjavur All Women Police arrested a house surgeon working at a government hospital on charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and remanded him to judicial custody on Thursday (January 15, 2026).

According to the police, a few days ago, the accused, who was on night duty, allegedly attempted to molest a 15-year-old girl who was staying at the hospital to take care of her relative.

The girl raised an alarm, attracting the attention of attendants of other patients in the ward, following which the house surgeon exited the ward.

The girl narrated the incident to her relatives the next day and a complaint was lodged with the Thanjavur All Women Police via the Thanjavur Medical College Outpost Police.

After a preliminary inquiry, the Thanjavur All Women Police registered a case under the POCSO Act and arrested Gopinath, from Aathur Thalaivasal in Salem district, and remanded him to judicial custody on Thursday, the police said.
