As the Houston Texans look to build on their promising 2024 campaign, all eyes are naturally on quarterback C.J. Stroud, star pass-catchers like Nico Collins, and a talented defense led by Will Anderson Jr.

and Derek Stingley Jr. But while the roster is packed with potential, one of the most critical pieces for the Texans’ success this season won’t take a single snap. Instead, he’ll be calling them. First-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley is being touted as one of the most pivotal figures in the entire NFL.

Nick Caley could be the key to Houston Texans’ rise and C.J. Stroud's comeback in 2025

ESPN analyst Kevin Clark made headlines recently by spotlighting Nick Caley as more than just a name to watch—he labeled him “one of the most important people in the NFL next year.”"He's one of the most important people in the NFL next year, because it's his job to get an elite quarterback back on track," Clark said of Caley. "He worked for Sean McVay and Bill Belichick. Those are two pretty good coaches to work under, if you haven't noticed. But, when you're a passing game coordinator for Sean McVay, you're not calling the shots. This is a huge leap up for him."The jump in responsibility is real, and the expectations are even higher.

Clark didn’t hold back when assessing Houston’s 2024 struggles either—pointing to scheme and protection breakdowns rather than pinning blame on Stroud.

"For me with the Texans, do not attribute to the quarterback what you can attribute to the offensive line and to the play-caller," he said. "What I like, is in his first press conference, C.J. Stroud said that Nick is going to give him a lot of control at the line of scrimmage. Bobby Slowik did not give him that.

I felt that Bobby Slowik's protection schemes were, frankly, at some points, amateur-ish last year."The Texans are betting on Caley’s pedigree—developed under offensive minds like McVay and Belichick—to elevate both the quarterback and the system. As Clark summed it up: “I think that C.J. Stroud is going to get back on track. He is as big of a bounceback candidate as there is in this league.”If Caley succeeds, he won’t just be the Texans' X-factor—he could redefine their ceiling. Also Read: Cam Ward Drafted No. 1: Why the pressure Is now on TennesseeTitans coach Brian Callahan
