Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticizes Pakistan Army's cross-border strikes on Afghanistan, drawing parallels to India's Operation Sindoor and urging policy rethink.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman has been a consistent critic of Pakistan’s Afghanistan policy.

A senior Pakistani lawmaker called out what he described as the hypocrisy of Islamabad’s security doctrine, drawing a direct parallel between Pakistan’s military actions against Afghanistan and India’s Operation Sindoor.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticised the Pakistan Army, led by Asim Munir, for cross-border strikes on Afghanistan that have resulted in civilian casualties. He argued that if Pakistan justifies attacking targets inside Afghan territory, it has little moral or logical basis to object when India carries out strikes inside Pakistan against terror infrastructure.

“If you say that we attacked our enemy in Afghanistan and justify this, then India can also say that it attacked Bahawalpur, Muridke and the headquarters of groups responsible for attacks in Kashmir," Maulana Fazlur Rehman said, referring to India’s retaliatory military action.

He added, “Then how can you raise objections? The same accusations are now being levelled against Pakistan by Afghanistan. How do you justify both positions?"

His remarks referenced Operation Sindoor, India’s pre-dawn missile strikes on May 7 this year targeting nine terror facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad hub in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s base in Muridke.

Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir in which 26 civilians were killed by terrorists linked to a Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman has been a consistent critic of Pakistan’s Afghanistan policy and has previously offered to mediate between Islamabad and Kabul during periods of heightened tension.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021, with Islamabad accusing Afghan authorities of sheltering militants- a charge Kabul denies. India recently condemned Pakistan’s fresh strikes on Afghanistan, reiterating support for Afghan sovereignty and territorial integrity.
