Diego Simeone clashes with Ben White after Arsenal 1-1 draw at Atletico, Mikel Arteta fumes over overturned Eberechi Eze penalty and vows to fight in London

Diego Simeone confronts Ben White for walking over Atleti emblem (X)
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was involved in a tense post-match confrontation with Ben White following Arsenal’s 1-1 draw in Madrid. The flashpoint occurred near the tunnel, where Simeone appeared irritated that White had walked across Atletico’s crest, triggering an exchange that quickly escalated.
As players and staff made their way off the pitch, an Atletico player initially confronted White before Simeone stepped in. The Argentine coach then appeared to tap White on the back twice, prompting a sharp reaction from the defender. Heated words followed, with Simeone pushing White as both sets of players and staff tried to calm the situation. Eventually, teammates and staff intervened to prevent further escalation.

The incident contrasted sharply with Simeone’s earlier warm interaction with Arsenal coach Gabriel Heinze, his former international teammate, whom he greeted with an embrace. His exchanges with other Arsenal staff, however, were noticeably colder.
Arsenal Boss Unhappy
On the pitch, the game itself was equally charged. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta voiced strong frustration over a controversial refereeing decision that denied his side a potential advantage in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. Referee Danny Makkelie initially awarded Arsenal a penalty after Eberechi Eze appeared to be fouled, only to overturn the decision following a VAR review.
“What I’m incredibly fuming about is how the hell the penalty on Ebs gets overturned," Arteta said. “If you have to watch it 13 times… That’s a goal that can change the course of the season. This cannot happen."
Arteta also reflected on the penalty awarded to Atlético, given after the ball struck White’s hand. Julian Alvarez converted from the spot to level the score in the second half.
“The same way we have to accept Ben White’s penalty, Ebs’s is a clear penalty," he said.
Despite the controversy, Arteta remained optimistic about the return leg. “It’s all to play for in London," he said.
