A 40-year-old man died after his home in Suraram, in northern part of Hyderabad, was flooded during overnight rain in the area, late on Tuesday (May 27, 2025).

The victim, Padma Rao, a driver by profession, was staying with his mother in a single-floor house in Dayanand Nagar. His wife and two children were away at her parental home at the time of the incident.

According to Suraram police inspector Bharath Kumar, Padma Rao had reportedly fallen asleep on the floor in an inebriated state when the rainwater entered the house and rose to nearly three feet. The incident was reported between 8.45 p.m. and 9 p.m. The Automatic Weather Station monitor recorded 3.7 cm rainfall in the Gajularamaram in the region.

Neighbours, alarmed by the rising water, alerted the police who then pulled both Rao and his mother out from the flooded home. While Rao was declared dead, his mother, who had been sleeping in another room, was rescued and is currently in a stable condition.

Police officials said their preliminary investigation suggested that the rainwater seeped into the house rapidly during the downpour, the official said. Officials have booked a case under Section 194 (unnatural death) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and further investigation is underway.
