Nearly 1,000 cases against the illegal use of sirens and multi-toned or musical horns were booked by the Hyderabad traffic police in a fortnight-long special drive.
Launched on August 4, the enforcement and awareness campaign is aimed at curbing the nuisance caused by unauthorised horns which not only cause public nuisance and panic but also lead to confusion on roads and accidents.
Between August 4 and 19, police booked 590 cases against motorists for using sirens and 397 cases for the use of multi-toned or musical horns. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis said the special drive would continue in the coming weeks.
Citing Rule 119 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 and Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, police reminded the public that such horns are strictly prohibited. Citizens have been advised to voluntarily remove them from their vehicles to avoid penal action.
The Traffic Police also urged road users to report violations through their social media handles or the traffic helpline number 9010203626.
