What began as a routine ticket check turned into a startling encounter for Indian Railways staff at Chennai station in Tamil Nadu. When a Government Railway Police (GRP) officer asked a man dressed as a sadhu, “Sadhubaba, may I see your ticket?", the man responded, “I am a sadhu. We don’t need tickets."

The officer was taken aback by the man’s response, and what followed next was even more shocking. The man calmly admitted, “I was once thrown off a train for not having a ticket. Now, I try to damage all the trains." This alarming statement triggered a thorough investigation by the GRP.

Further inquiry revealed that the man, posing as a sadhu, was a school dropout from Odisha, named Om. He had embarked on a self-proclaimed spiritual journey but was found to have been involved in multiple acts of railway sabotage. Om had allegedly placed stones and metal rods on railway tracks in Tamil Nadu and Telangana, putting countless lives at risk.

According to Chennai GRP Superintendent I Easwaran, Om strategically targeted six railway junctions, but thanks to the vigilance of loco pilots, no major accidents occurred. Authorities confirmed that Om had been acting in this manner, driven by his resentment after being removed from a train years ago.

Om is currently in judicial custody at Puzhal Jail, facing charges for endangering railway safety. His case underscores the ongoing challenge of unauthorised passengers and the critical importance of vigilance on India’s vast rail network.
