Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym admitted he was “half-fuming" despite being the hero of a historic Carabao Cup upset against the club he supports.
The Manchester United fan helped his League Two side knock the 20-time English champions out of the competition with a 12-11 penalty shootout victory after a 2-2 draw at a raucous Blundell Park.

“Half-Fuming" but Overjoyed
“It’s not sunk in yet. I’m a Man Utd fan, so I’m half-fuming a little bit," Pym joked afterwards.
“Nights like this are what you play football for. Just brilliant. I should have done a little bit better (in the shootout), shouldn’t I? I made one save to keep us in it and the boys did the rest. It’s brilliant."
United’s nightmare began with a low strike from Charles Vernam before Tyrell Warren, a product of the Old Trafford academy, pounced on Andre Onana’s fumble to double Grimsby’s lead. Although Mbeumo curled home and Harry Maguire headed a late equaliser, Amorim’s side could not escape embarrassment.
For Grimsby, it was a first meeting with United since 1948, and one that will be remembered as one of the club’s greatest nights.
The Mariners now advance to face Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in round three between September 15–22.
Amorim’s Blunt Assessment
Manager Ruben Amorim offered little comfort in defeat. “I felt my players spoke really loud today what they want," he said. “The way we started the game, we were not even here. Everything that happened is a problem in our club. I just have to say sorry to our fans."
When asked if penalties changed the perception of the result, he replied: “Doesn’t matter. Football was really fair today. The best team won."
