Tottenham star Xavi Simons issued an apology to Liverpool skipper Virgil Van Dijk following his dangerous tackle on his compatriot during the Spurs’ Premier League game against the Reds, which ended 2-1 in favour of Arne Slot’s men as second half strikes form Alexader Isak and Hugo Ekitike rendered a late Richarlison goal a mere consolation.

Simons was sent off for his challenge on the Dutch captain in the 33rd minute of the game, leaving Thomas Frank and Co. in a difficult situation.

“Mistakes happen. Virg is my captain and I would never intentionally hurt him or anyone," the Dutchman said.

“To my Spurs teammates, my manager and the fans, I take responsibility, I’m really sorry," the midfielder said.

To make matters worse, Cristian Romero was sent off in additional time of the second half reducing Tottenham to nine-men.

Swede Isak scored only his third goal since joining Liverpool for £125 million in September, but suffered another injury setback and had to be substituted.

Hugo Ekitike headed in his fifth goal in three league games to double Liverpool’s lead. However, Slot’s men faltered in the closing stages after Richarlison pulled a goal back.
