A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot an undocumented immigrant in a Chicago suburb on Friday after the man attempted to evade detention by driving his car into law enforcement officers, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), reported AFP.
The shooting occurred in Franklin Park, approximately 18 miles (29 kilometers) west of downtown Chicago. The suspect, who remains unidentified, reportedly refused to comply with officers’ commands during a traffic stop and instead drove his vehicle toward them. One ICE officer was struck and dragged a significant distance by the vehicle before opening fire, DHS said in an official statement.
ICE described the individual as “a criminal illegal alien with a history of reckless driving" who had entered the US at an unknown time and date. Both the officer and the suspect were transported to a local hospital, where the suspect was later pronounced dead.
“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement," said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
The incident marks a rare fatal encounter between ICE officers and undocumented individuals. It occurred amid an ongoing ICE enforcement initiative in the city known as “Midway Blitz," which is aimed at apprehending undocumented migrants in the Chicago area.
The shooting also underscores broader tensions surrounding the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies. President Donald Trump had made immigration enforcement a central focus of his platform, dramatically expanding ICE’s operations and personnel as part of a nationwide effort to detain and deport undocumented individuals. ICE officers, often outfitted in military-style gear, have frequently been filmed conducting high-profile raids across the country.
McLaughlin further noted that “viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement" have increasingly put officers in harm’s way, making their jobs more dangerous.
The incident remains under investigation.
