Imane Khelif appeals to CAS against a gender test required by the global boxing federation, seeking eligibility for the 2025 World Boxing Championships without the test.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has appealed to sport’s top court — the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) – to challenge the implementation of a gender test.
The CAS announced that Khelif is contesting the global boxing federation’s ruling that ‘disallows the athlete’s participation in upcoming World Boxing events without a preliminary genetic test’. Khelif’s appeal also urges CAS to declare the 26-year-old eligible for the 2025 World Boxing Championships in September without a test.
Both parties are said to be exchanging written submissions. A hearing will be scheduled by Cas in due course if an agreement is reached between them.
Khelif, along with Taiwanese fighter Lin Yu-ting, sparked a gender eligibility debate at the Paris Games. Lin is set to undergo the test for the World Championships, which will run from 4-14 September.
“They have declared that everyone must comply, so we will comply as well," said Lin’s coach Tseng Tzu-chiang. “If you want to compete, you must adhere to the competition rules. Since we are participating, we will follow their rules."
Lin and Khelif both competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 without controversy, although neither won a medal. Neither is a transgender woman — both were born and raised as women, as indicated on their passports.
Both fighters are Olympic gold medalists, but Khelif’s initial bout, which left her Italian opponent in tears, attracted criticism from various commentators, including now-US Vice President JD Vance and popular author J.K. Rowling.
Last month, Khelif denied accusations by her former manager, Nasser Yesfah, that she was pausing her career.
“I would like to make it clear to the public that the reports of my retirement from boxing are false," she said in an update on social media platform Facebook. “This person no longer represents me in any way," she said. I have never announced my retirement from boxing. I remain committed to my sporting career, I train regularly and I maintain my physical condition between Algeria and Qatar in preparation for upcoming events," she added.
