The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a weather alert predicting rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds of up to 70 km per hour in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) over the next three days, starting today.
The IMD has indicated a noticeable shift in weather patterns from 29 May. “There are chances of some very light to light rain now. On Thursday, similar rain activity is expected, with the intensity even higher on Friday," the IMD said in its advisory.
The weather department also warned that “thundersquall wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, is likely over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on May 30."
Similar weather conditions are expected in Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and parts of Rajasthan during this period.
Despite the warning, Delhi and surrounding areas experienced harsh sunlight and rising temperatures on Wednesday. A heatwave gripped the region throughout the day, with the maximum temperature recorded at 39°C and the minimum at 27°C.
Humidity levels have also surged, with morning humidity touching 75%, making conditions sticky and uncomfortable during peak hours.
According to meteorologists, the changing weather is due to a combination of western disturbances and moisture coming in from the Bay of Bengal. This system is likely to affect the region for the next few days.
Looking ahead, weather conditions may settle briefly at the start of June. On 1 June, skies are expected to be partly cloudy with daytime temperatures around 37°C. However, from 2–3 June, Delhi-NCR may again see overcast skies with chances of more rain and thunderstorms.
Authorities have advised residents to take the alerts seriously. People are urged to stay indoors during storms, avoid using electrical appliances unnecessarily, and stay hydrated to cope with the rising heat and humidity.
