EU envoy Hervé Delphin urges cautious Gulf rhetoric as Iran faces US peace deadline, highlights India EU coordination on de-escalation and energy security cooperation.

EU Ambassador to India Hervé Delphin speaks to CNN-News18.
As the deadline for Iran to accept US’s 15-point peace proposal or face severe military consequences, European Union Ambassador to India Hervé Delphin has urged leaders to consider long-term consequences while making statements on the Gulf situation.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Delphin said: “What happens in the Gulf impacts us, and while commentators want bold statements, leaders must consider the long-term consequences."
He said: “Early in this conflict, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the high representative for EU foreign policy have been in constant touch, exchanging, consulting each other, comparing notes about how, what can we do about this situation, what are our key concerns, and how we can de-escalate and bring back this situation to normalcy and the priority, certainly, to restore the freedom of maritime passage in the Strait of Hormuz."
Gulf countries have recently faced repeated drone and missile attacks from Iran in response to US and Israeli strikes since late February. Iran has also effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one‑fifth of the world’s oil normally passes, while targeting hydrocarbon infrastructure in oil-rich Gulf states.
In reply to a question on whether India and the EU de-risk supply together, the ambassador said: “The choke point for both India and EU is jet fuel; as an alternative, India has a lot of potential to produce renewable energy; in that sense, we would want to cooperate. The EU can bring investments, tech, research, and support India to scale up."
Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday said more than 14 million citizens have expressed willingness to sacrifice their lives to defend the country as tensions escalate ahead of a US deadline on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
His remarks come as US President Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran to allow shipping through the Strait of Hormuz approaches, with Washington warning of massive strikes on critical infrastructure if Tehran fails to comply.
