Imposter cops dupe woman of Rs 4 lakh online

Vasco: Verna police registered an offence against unidentified people for cheating a woman residing at Verna of Rs 4 lakh by impersonating Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) police and a CBI officer.

The complainant, a native of Gujarat, said that on Dec 12, 2024, some unidentified people contacted her through WhatsApp video calling.The accused induced the complainant by claiming that her phone number is linked to illegal activities such as receiving, concealing and dealing with money for kidnapping, human trafficking and money laundering and an FIR is being registered against her.Later on, another unidentified person contacted her on WhatsApp claiming to be a CBI officer and showed his ID card. He then sent the complainant a fake arrest order issued against her.The person demanded money and further threatened to arrest her and her minor daughter. She paid Rs 4 lakh in three different transactions through UPI transfer and bank transfer.Verna police registered the offence.
