Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) on Monday announced that segregation of waste at source has improved in the city, which has resulted in a rise in the collection of low-value plastic waste, also known as refuse derived fuel (RDF).
BSWML attributed the development to the extensive Information, Education and Communication (IEC) programmes taken up by the agency to improve public awareness and participation in waste segregation at source.
“Improved segregation practices across the city have led to a steady increase in RDF generation,” BSWML said in a statement. At present, the city is generating and collecting approximately 350 to 400 tonnes of RDF every day. Around 100 to 150 tonnes of RDF are being transported daily to the waste-to-energy plant near Bidadi. In addition, BSWML has entered into an agreement with Dalmia Cement Limited to transport a further 200 to 250 tonnes of RDF to the company’s cement manufacturing unit located in Kadapa district, in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, said BSWML.
On the first day of operations under the new arrangement, on Monday, a total of 160 tonnes of RDF were dispatched to the cement plant. Officials said the partnership is expected to significantly ease the burden on landfills. As per the agreement, Dalmia Cement Limited has committed to accept up to 1,000 tonnes of RDF per day from BSWML.
Apart from environmental benefits, the arrangement will provide financial gains to BSWML. Under the terms of the agreement, Dalmia Cement will provide Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) credits generated through the utilisation of RDF to BSWML.
