Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a high-stakes rally in poll-bound Bihar on Friday, launched a scathing attack on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress, accusing them of insulting Dr BR Ambedkar and betraying the aspirations of Dalits and backward classes. His remarks come in the backdrop of a growing controversy over a viral video that purportedly shows RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav placing an image of Ambedkar near a chair, before resting his leg on it.
Without naming Lalu directly, Modi invoked the incident to question the Opposition’s commitment to social justice. “RJD and Congress keep Babasaheb’s image under their feet. Modi keeps it in his heart," he said. He added, “RJD will never apologise for what happened as they have no respect for Dalits and backwards."
Modi said the people of Bihar would not forget what he described as a deliberate slight. “People will never forget this insult of Babasaheb by Congress and RJD," he stated.
The Prime Minister also used the platform to paint the Opposition as a roadblock to progress and investment. “RJD and Congress actions are anti-Bihar and anti-investment. Whenever they talk about development, people see locks hanging on shops, businesses, industries and trades… These people have been the nurturers of poor infrastructure, mafia raj, gunda raj, and corruption," he said.
