An agriculture labourer, Chellamma, drowned and another woman, Varalakshmi, went missing in Kavadi Konda Vaagu stream which was in a spate on the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana border. The body of Chellamma was traced.
“The victims were natives of Puchdikapadu village, Jeelugumilli mandal, in Eluru district. The incident occurred when Chellamma and Varalakshmi were returning from Aswaraopet mandal in Telangana after attending to their work on Sunday morning,” said Polavaram Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) M. Venkateswara Rao.
“Owning to heavy rains in the upstream mandals in Telangana State, about 25 small and major rivulets and streams were overflowing on the ‘Saptas’ (low level bridges). Three habitations were cut-off from the main stream,” said Eluru district Superintendent of Police K. Pratap Shiva Kishore.
“On knowing about missing of the women in Kavadi Konda Vaagu, the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched search operations by using drones. Police are searching for Varalakshmi,” the SP said.
In T. Narsapuram mandal, many rivulets were overflowing owing to incessant rainfall, Mr. Pratap Shiva Kishore said.
“Pickets have been arranged at many places, and villagers are requested to cooperate with the police and avoid crossing the overflowing streams and rivulets,” Mr. Venkateswara Rao, who visited the pickets,” told The Hindu on Sunday (September 14, 2025.)
“Jeelugumilli Circle Inspector Venkateswara Rao, police officers of Velerupadu, T. Narsapuram, Jeelugumilli were posted at the pickets,” the DSP said.
