“India is set to become the world’s third-largest economy… therefore, India must remain vigilant about its economic interests," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at a public rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi on Thursday, adding: “Our farmers, our small industries, employment for our youth… their interests are paramount for us. The government is making every effort in this direction."

The prime minister’s remarks come in the backdrop of a huge debate stirred by a social media post by Donald Trump in which the US President termed India a “dead economy" while commenting on the country’s ties with Russia. Back home, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi latched on to Trump’s comments, making “dead economy" a political slogan, even though several of his party colleagues and allies appeared to differ.

Noting the “atmosphere of global instability" on Saturday, PM Modi emphasised that the government is doing everything necessary to serve the country’s best interests.

“Our government is doing everything it can in the best interest of the country… Those who want the best for the country and want to see India as the third biggest economy in the world, be it any political party, should leave their differences aside and instil a resolution for ‘swadeshi’ products. We will buy only those things that are made by Indians. We need to become vocal for local," the prime minister added.
