India is well on track to meeting its 2030 renewable energy targets, and has already crossed the milestone of 275.45 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity, the Centre told Parliament.

Elaborating on the grid connectivity, minister of state for new and renewable energy and power Shripad Yesso Naik said the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has already released a plan to integrate more than 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, covering all renewables-rich states.

Naik said transmission systems are being planned in advance based on projected capacity additions, in line with the 2030 target. As on January 31, transmission systems for 271.78 GW of renewable energy (RE) are already commissioned, about 207 GW is under construction/bidding at the interstate transmission system (ISTS) level and additional intrastate transmission systems are planned by states under the green energy corridor (GEC) programme.

GUJARAT & RAJASTHAN LEADING, SOLAR DOMINANT

According to the government data, out of the total 275.45 GW non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity installed so far, solar power continues to occupy the largest share of 143.60 GW, followed by 56.33 GW hydro power (including pumped storage), 55.13 GW wind power, 11.61 GW bio power and 8.78 GW nuclear power. The current installed battery energy storage capacity is around 0.8 GWh and pumped storage hydro capacity is 7.2 GW.

Among the RE-rich states, Gujarat (44,916 MW), and Rajasthan (44,601 MW) continue to lead in installations followed by Maharashtra (31,666 MW), Tamil Nadu (27,828 MW), and Karnataka (26,421 MW). Responding to concerns over the delay in projects, Naik said India is well on track to achieving its renewable energy targets despite the ongoing challenges.

“Like any large-scale transformation, there are challenges related to delays in land acquisition, transmission infrastructure development, and tariff adoption approval from Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), module supply chain disturbance, and meeting the financing requirements to match with the increasing pace of development of renewable energy capacity," Naik said.

He said most of the solar and wind power projects are implemented by private developers and the land required for the projects are identified and acquired by them. Since land is a state subject, the identification of land is generally done through the respective state/UT. The central government is making efforts to strengthen and sustain investors’ confidence, he added.

PUSH FOR ‘MAKE IN INDIA’

As part of its plan to promote indigenous manufacturing of solar energy equipment such as solar panels, the ministry of new & renewable energy (MNRE) said as per the approved list of models and manufacturers (ALMM) issued on March 1, the solar PV module manufacturing capacity in the country is 1,72,592 MW.

The government said in terms of indigenous manufacturing of wind energy equipment, around 70 to 80 percent indigenisation has been achieved with strong domestic manufacturing in the wind sector. The current annual production capacity of wind turbines in the country was stated to be around 20,000 MW, against domestic demand of 7 to 8 GW per year. In addition, 15,000 MW annual production capacity of wind turbine blades is available in the country, Naik said.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana launched in February 2024 to achieve rooftop solar (RTS) installations in one crore households in the residential sector by FY 2026-27, has already achieved installations of about 25.87 lakh rooftop solar systems.
