An Indian Air Force AN-32 transport aircraft crashed and caught fire Saturday morning at the Jorhat Air Force Station in Assam, according to the service. Early reports say the aircraft went down inside the base while landing and burst into flames on impact. Emergency crews rushed over right away to put out the fire and secure the area. The Air Force has started an investigation and says it’ll share more details once they have a clearer picture. Right now, there’s no official word on how many people were on board, or if there were any casualties or injuries. Authorities were still checking the scene when this update was published.

The Antonov AN-32 has been a backbone for the Indian Air Force for years. It’s a rugged twin-engine turboprop that can handle just about anything—high-altitude airstrips, scorching heat, you name it. India operates around 100 of these planes, mostly for hauling cargo, transporting troops, and supply drops to remote spots.

This isn’t the first crash in the region this year. Back in March, two pilots died when a Sukhoi Su-30MKI went down in Karbi Anglong, about 60 kilometers from Jorhat. That jet lost contact with controllers not long after taking off from the same base. The Air Force hasn’t shared more about the current AN-32 accident yet, and they’re keeping the base off-limits to the media and the public while crews finish their work. For now, people have been asked to rely only on official statements for accurate information.
