In a disturbing incident, a 26-year-old student from Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain was allegedly killed in Canada by his collegemates. As per the reports, the victim was first assaulted and then run over by car. Devastated by the news, his family now awaits the body to perform last rites.

The victim, identified as Gurkirat Singh Manocha, had gone to Canada 15 months ago to pursue higher education.

According to the Gurkirat’s family, the incident took place on March 15 when he got involved in an altercation with a group of youths near Charlie Lake. He sustained grave injuries and then died.

Madhya Pradesh government took note of the incident and Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav expressed condolences.

Who Was Gurkirat Singh Manocha?

Gurkirat Singh Manocha was a resident of Parshwanath Colony on Dewas Road in Ujjain. He relocated to Canada about a year and three months ago to further his education. Reports indicate that Gurkirat was studying at Northern Lights College, where he was enrolled in a Business Management Post-Degree Diploma programme. Like many Indian students who go abroad for higher education, he aspired to create a better future through his studies.

As per a report by NDTV, the family was informed about the tragedy via Gurkirat’s friend, who is also an Indian-origin student in Canada.

Gurkirat’s brother, Prabkirat Singh, told NDTV that 10-12 youths are expected to be involved in the murder. Canadian police are now investigating the case and sent a picture of Gurkirat to keep them informed of the process.

He also added that police detained a few suspects, but they were released after their lawyers arrived. “We want our brother’s body to be brought back to India so that we can perform his last rites in Ujjain," Prabkirat said.
