The Embassy of India in Mali responded to the kidnapping of five Indians by a group in Mali. The embassy, while acknowledging the awareness of the kidnapping, assured that it has been working closely with the Malian authorities for the safe and early release of the victims.

Five Indian nationals were kidnapped by gunmen in Mali on Thursday. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the same."The Embassy is aware of the unfortunate incident of kidnapping of five of our nationals in Mali on 6 Nov 2025," the embassy wrote, "The Embassy has been working closely with the Mali authorities and the company concerned to secure their safe release as quickly as possible."

According to the company and security officials, the five men were working on an electrification project near Kobri in the country's west when a few gunmen intercepted the company's convoy.

They also confirmed the evacuation of the remaining employees to the Malian capital, Bamako. No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. However, Mali has been battling with attacks from Al-Qaeda linked jihadist-terrorist groups, increasing violent occurrences in the country.According to CNN, the group, Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam al-Muslimin (JNIM), has intensified attacks on highways, fuel convoys, and security forces, threatening to isolate the city from the rest of the country.

The unrest has prompted several countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, to issue travel advisories urging their citizens to leave Mali amid what they describe as an “unpredictable security situation.

Kidnappings of foreign nationals are not uncommon in the junta-ruled Mali, which has faced political instability and frequent insurgent attacks since 2012. In a similar incident earlier this year, JNIM militants abducted two Emirati citizens and an Iranian near Bamako.
