Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that Indonesia has expressed interest in purchasing the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

While addressing BJP workers in Lucknow, Singh said that Jakarta has made a bid to purchase the supersonic missile being manufactured in Lucknow.

“Indonesia has requested to purchase the BrahMos missile being manufactured in Lucknow," Singh said as quoted by news agency PTI.

His remark came nearly a month after Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off the first batch of BrahMos missiles produced at the newly operational BrahMos Aerospace integration and testing facility in Lucknow on October 18.

The state-of-the-art facility, built at a cost of Rs 300 crore and inaugurated on May 11, has now become fully functional.

Located in Bhatgaon, Sarojini Nagar, the unit is among the most significant projects of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor. According to officials, assembly, integration, and testing of the missiles are being carried out using high-tech standards. The Uttar Pradesh government allotted 80 hectares of land for the project free of charge.

Earlier this year, it was reported that New Delhi and Jakarta were working to conclude a $450 million worth ‘BrahMos missile’ deal ahead of President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to New Delhi.

If finalised, Indonesia would become the second ASEAN nation after the Philippines to acquire BrahMos missile. The defence weapon, known for its speed and precision, would significantly enhance Indonesia’s coastal and maritime defense capabilities.

New Delhi and Jakarta have been stepping up cooperation in the defence sector, since the signing of the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2018. The two nations have engaged in bilateral naval exercises– Samudra Shakti– since that year.

All About BrahMos

The BrahMos missile is a versatile and formidable weapon, capable of being launched from land, air and sea, enabling strikes from multiple fronts. Jointly developed by India and Russia, it is renowned for its supersonic speed, pinpoint accuracy, and adaptability across a range of military operations.

During Operation Sindoor, the IAF relied on BrahMos missiles to launch a precision strike campaign targeting key Pakistani military installations, including airbases and cantonments. The operation, which was executed with high accuracy and minimal collateral damage, has been hailed within defence circles as a major demonstration of India’s growing long-range strike capability.

India launched “precision strikes" under Operation Sindoor on nine terror targets in Pakistan and PoK following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. The strikes killed over 100 terrorists, including 10 family members of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar and four close aides.
