The killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man in Bangladesh, has triggered strong reactions from Hindu organisations, minority rights groups and international lawmakers, with calls growing for accountability, justice and protection of religious minorities amid ongoing unrest in the country.

According to protesters and rights groups in Bangladesh, Dipu Chandra Das was lynched in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, after being falsely accused of religious defamation.

Demonstrators have alleged that he was beaten to death by a mob, hung from a tree and later set on fire.

The incident has been cited as part of what they describe as a broader pattern of religious extremism, mob violence and administrative inaction targeting minority communities.

A petition has been registered with the United Nations against Bangladesh.

Antarrashtriya Hindu Seva Sangh, a human rights organisation, working for the protection of persecuted Hindu minorities across the world, has filed a petition on Dipu Das’s murder.

The killing has also drawn sharp condemnation from Hindu groups in Mauritius.

In a letter dated December 22, 2025, addressed to the High Commissioner of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Port Louis, the Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation expressed its “strongest condemnation and deep outrage over the brutal killing of Shri Deepu in Bangladesh, reportedly followed by the burning of his body."

“This inhumane act has shocked the conscience of Hindus in Mauritius and across the world," the federation said in the letter.

Emphasising that the killing was “not an isolated crime," the organisation said it reflected “a grave failure to protect a religious minority" and constituted “a serious violation of fundamental human rights, religious freedom, and human dignity."

Raising questions about the safety of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, the letter asked, “Why are Hindus repeatedly subjected to violence? Why does religious identity continue to place lives at risk?"

It added that Bangladesh was founded on principles of secularism, equality and tolerance, and that acts of religiously motivated violence directly contradicted these values.

The federation demanded immediate and concrete action, including “a transparent, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the killing of Shri Deepu," swift arrest and punishment of all perpetrators, public assurances guaranteeing the safety and equal treatment of Hindu minorities, and “zero tolerance for religious extremism, mob violence, and hate-driven crimes."

Warning against inaction, the letter stated, “Failure to act decisively will only embolden perpetrators and signal that minority lives are expendable."

International condemnation has also followed.

US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi strongly condemned what he described as the targeted mob killing of Dipu Chandra Das amid growing instability and unrest in Bangladesh.

“I am appalled by the targeted mob killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man in Bangladesh, an act of violence amid a period of dangerous instability and unrest," Krishnamoorthi said.

While noting that authorities had reported arrests, the US lawmaker said the Government of Bangladesh “must aggressively pursue a full and transparent investigation and prosecute all those responsible to the fullest extent of the law."

He also called for urgent measures to protect Hindu communities and other religious minorities, adding that “for the sake of all Bangladeshis, this unrest must end and the rule of law must be upheld."

Inside Bangladesh, the killing has sparked protests by Hindu religious organisations and minority rights groups.

As reported by ANI, demonstrators gathered in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, condemning the lynching and alleging growing religious extremism and impunity.

One protester said the killing of Dipu Das had exposed how “a completely innocent person from a religious minority community was brutally murdered by religious fanatics."

Protesters further alleged that the incident received inadequate attention from political leaders and authorities, warning that continued silence would deepen fear and insecurity among minority communities.

They linked the killing to wider unrest and raised concerns about the ability of religious minorities to live safely and exercise their democratic rights.
