The inspector attached to the Bellandur Police Station has been suspended on the charges of alleged deriliction of duty and lapses on his part following allegations that the staff at the station had demanded a bribe from a grieving man to hand over the Unnatural Death Report (UDR) and post-mortem report of his daughter, who died of brain haemorrhage at a private hospital in November this year.

City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh ordered the suspension after an inquiry was conducted by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

Shivakumar, a former BPCL official, had accused the inspector and other staff of demanding bribe for an official favour right from conducting post-mortem, ambulance service, and issuance of the UDR certificate. He alleged that even when his daughter was in a critical condition, the officials insisted on payments and failed to respond with basic courtesy.

A few days earlier, the victim’s social media post went viral, prompting departmental action. Whitefield Deputy Commissioner of Police K. Parashuram had already suspended Bellandur Police sub-inspector Santosh and Constable Goraknath, with a detailed inquiry still in progress.

The Commissioner had directed Parashuram to probe the allegations further, after which Whitefield sub-division ACP Balakrishna submitted a report three days ago confirming lapses on the inspector’s part.

Meanwhile, the ACP, Marathahalli sub-division, and her staff conducted a probe on the alleged custodial torture of a 34-year-old domestic help by the personnel of the Varthur police station.

The police also recorded a detailed statement of the victim and videograped the event after she narrated the ordeal before the officials.
