The political standoff in West Bengal over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls sharpened on Friday after BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya challenged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s statements regarding her own enumeration form.

The BJP mounted a counteroffensive hours after Banerjee told a rally in Krishnanagar that she had not filled out her form, alleging that such demands were attempts to force her to “prove" her citizenship.

Malviya took to X and referenced a report with The Economic Times, which claimed that officials from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office have stated that Mamata Banerjee’s enumeration form had, in fact, already been filed and was listed under the “marked" or “flagged" category, reserved for individuals in public service, culture, sports, and similar fields.

The report also noted that the Chief Minister’s form had raised certain flags within the system, though no further details were immediately available.

Subsequently, in his social media post, Malviya accused Banerjee of deliberately misleading the public despite having already submitted the form.

“West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again shown her instinct to mislead. She submitted her duly filled and signed Enumeration Form on the very last day, yet just hours earlier from a rally in Krishnanagar, she falsely claimed she would not submit it at all," he wrote.

He further alleged that after “months of misinformation," the Chief Minister finally filed her SIR form on December 11, even as she continued to accuse the BJP of using the process to target voters in the state.

Malviya also asserted that nearly “100 per cent voters" in West Bengal had completed and submitted their SIR forms, which he claimed was why the Election Commission did not extend the exercise in the state while granting extensions to multiple others.

He argued that the episode demonstrated that “Bengal’s voters no longer trust the lies peddled by Mamata Banerjee," adding that the “expiry date of TMC government is approaching fast."

Banerjee, however, continued to sharpen her attack on the BJP during her Krishnanagar address, as reported by ANI.

She alleged that the ruling party at the Centre was attempting to “take away the rights" of women through the SIR process and was using it as a tool to “terrify" voters.

“Through SIR, they want to take away the rights of women. During elections, they want to use Central forces to terrify the women," she said, urging women to “lead the fight" and asking men to support them from behind.

She also accused BJP leaders of “pressurising" district magistrates to remove names from the electoral rolls.

“From Delhi, the BJP is sending people to pressurise the district magistrates with the intent of removing 1.5 crore names from the electoral list," she said, warning that she would launch a sit-in protest if any voter was “deliberately removed."

Banerjee further claimed that officials were being “terrified" by BJP operatives and declared that the party “won’t be in power forever."

The Election Commission on Thursday extended SIR deadlines for Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Uttar Pradesh, but West Bengal was not among the states granted additional time.
