Iran ruled out the possibility of resuming nuclear negotiations with the United States anytime soon, days after US airstrikes inflicted heavy damage on Iranian nuclear facilities. Speaking on Iranian state television, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made it clear that despite speculation, diplomatic engagement with Washington is currently off the table. His remarks stand in stark contrast to US President Donald Trump’s earlier statement that nuclear talks with Iran could begin “as early as next week."
“No agreement has been made for resuming the negotiations. No time has been set, no promise has been made, and we haven’t even talked about restarting the talks," Abbas Araghchi said.
What Pentagon Said On US Strikes In Iran
The Pentagon said that before the precision airstrikes were carried out on Iran’s nuclear sites, US intelligence observed Iranian crews trying to conceal Fordow’s main shafts by pouring concrete over them just days before the strike. Despite Iran’s last-minute efforts to shield the site, the US successfully penetrated the facility using bunker-busting munitions, rendering the concealment ineffective, the Pentagon said.
Addressing whether Iran evacuated enriched uranium ahead of the operation, both the Pentagon and the White House asserted that there was “no indication any material was removed" prior to the bombing. Iran responded to airstrikes by the United States by firing missiles at a US military base in Qatar, causing no reported casualties. Abbas Araghchi said that the US military intervention had “made it more complicated and more difficult" to return to the table for nuclear talks.
Have Iran’s Nuclear Facilities Been Damaged By US Strikes?
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi described the damage at Iran’s Fordow facility as “very, very, very considerable." He said, “These centrifuges are no longer operational. It’s not possible they escaped damage from multiple 30,000-pound bombs."
Iran has so far refused to grant IAEA inspectors access to the affected sites, saying inspectors will be barred “for the time being."
