US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday officially renaming the Department of Defense as the Department of War. The signing ceremony took place at the White House in the presence of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

This marks the 200th executive order signed by President Trump since taking office in January this year.

Prior to the signing, Hegseth addressed the room, declaring, “This War Department, Mr. President, just like America, is BACK… We’re going to set the tone for this country."

The name change revives the department’s historic title, last used officially in the 1940s, and aligns with the Trump administration’s broader “warrior ethos" campaign. The move underscores a symbolic shift in how the administration wants to present US military posture to both domestic and global audiences.
