Bangladesh mob lynching: Dipu Chandra Das, a young garment factory worker, was brutally lynched by a mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh earlier this week over allegations of blasphemy. After thrashing and killing Das, the mob hung his body from a tree and set it on fire. Meanwhile, the mob that encircled him in Bhaluka, many of whom he knew, took out their smartphones to record the spectacle.

The lynching occurred amid the widespread unrest that followed the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure of last year’s student-led uprising, which led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, Dipu’s father, Ravilal Das, recounted the horror of events leading up to his son’s death. He said the family first learned about the incident through social media.

“We saw it on Facebook. From Facebook we started hearing things, then more people were saying it – and then we found out when someone said to me , my brother…my brother, he was beaten, beaten badly. Then my uncle came after half an hour later and told me they took my son…and they tied him to a tree," Ravilal told NDTV.

The grieving father said the mob then poured kerosene on Dipu and set him on fire. “His burned body was left outside. They tied the burned torso and head outside together. It was horrible," he added.

What Happened On Thursday?

The incident took place in the Dubalia Para area of Square Master Bari in Bhaluka upazila. The 25-year-old man was employed at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in the Square Master Bari. As per eyewitnesses, the allegations of blasphemy spread rapidly within the factory premises and surrounding areas, triggering tension. An angry mob later assaulted Das, beating him severely.

“A group of agitated people caught him and beat him up around 9 pm on Thursday for insulting the Prophet. Then they set his body on fire," Ripon Mia, duty officer of Bhaluka police station, told BBC Bangla.

He said the attackers tied the body to a tree before setting it ablaze. Police reached the spot after receiving information and brought the situation under control.

7 People Arrested So Far

Meanwhile, seven people have been arrested in connection with the lynching case.

In a statement on X, the Bangladesh government said that the arrests followed a series of operations conducted by RAB-14 across various locations.

“The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven individuals as suspects in the beating murder of Dipu Chandra Das (27), a Sanatan Hindu youth, in Baluka, Mymensingh."

According to the statement, those arrested are Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain (38) and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46).
