The Uttar Pradesh Government, in a Cabinet meeting on Monday (July 6, 2026), approved a proposal to rename the town of Jalalabad, which lies in the Jalalabad Municipal Council area in Shahjahanpur district, as ‘Parshurampuri’. The decision will come into effect once the notification is issued.

Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said, “The proposal placed before the Cabinet sought the renaming of the town of Jalalabad as ‘Parshurampuri‘. The Council of Ministers has approved the proposal. The departments concerned will now complete administrative and legal formalities relating to the renaming. The name of the town will then be changed in all government records, departmental documents, and other official records in accordance with the prescribed procedure.”

An official statement from the U.P. Government noted, “The town of Jalalabad is renowned as the birthplace of Bhagwan Parshuram. It finds prominent mention in mythological accounts and scriptures. Because of this historical and religious significance, public representatives and local residents have been demanding that the town be renamed ‘Parshurampuri’. After the Government of India cleared the proposal, the State Government too approved the proposal.”

“This is a calculated decision by the BJP in an election year, but it will not help them. The aim is to draw attention away from the fraud at the Ram Temple,” said U.P. Congress president Ajay Rai.
