The stage is set for the 2026 FIDE World Chess Championship, with Javokhir Sindarov emerging as the challenger to reigning world champion D Gukesh.
Remarkably, Sindarov secured his spot even before the FIDE Candidates Tournament officially concluded, underlining the dominance of his campaign.
How Javokhir Sindarov Booked D Gukesh Clash?

Coming into the event, Sindarov was not among the main favourites. Players such as Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura were widely expected to lead the race. However, Sindarov’s stunning victory over Caruana in the fourth round turned the tide. From there, he built unstoppable momentum, winning four consecutive games and reaching an impressive 6/7 score at the halfway mark.
When Is 2026 FIDE World Chess Championship?
The upcoming World Championship clash, likely to be held towards the end of the year, has already generated excitement. Gukesh and Sindarov share striking similarities—both became Grandmasters at 12 and both claimed individual gold at the 2022 Chess Olympiad. They also won the Candidates on debut, with Gukesh losing just one game and Sindarov remaining unbeaten so far.
Sindarov Vs Gukesh – Battle Of Form And History
Sindarov’s current form has drawn comparisons to Gukesh’s extraordinary run in 2024, when the Indian became the youngest-ever Candidates and World Champion. The Uzbek star has also etched his name in history by winning the FIDE World Cup, defeating Wei Yi in the final.
Although Sindarov is widely seen as the favourite, Gukesh’s recent form has been inconsistent. Despite notable achievements such as finishing runner-up at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament and defeating Magnus Carlsen twice, he has struggled with consistency in recent months.
Who is Favourite – Gukesh Or Sindarov?
What truly sets the two apart is their playing style. Gukesh is known for deep calculation and resilience, while Sindarov has impressed with his speed and precision.
Despite the prevailing narratives, Gukesh cannot be written off. Sindarov himself acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, “He has a lot of strong skills and it will be a very exciting match. I will be very excited for this match and he has a very good team. I will just say good luck to him."
