US Vice President JD Vance says only a second Iran 10 point proposal is guiding US talks, dismisses other drafts as unserious amid uncertain ceasefire negotiations

US Vice President JD Vance on Thursday said multiple versions of Iran’s 10-point proposal had confused ongoing negotiations, claiming that at least one draft was not taken seriously by US officials. Follow Live Updates Here 

Speaking to reporters while leaving Hungary, Vance said the first version of the proposal was quickly rejected. “The first 10-point proposal was something that was submitted, and we think, frankly, was probably written by ChatGPT, that was submitted to Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, which immediately went in the garbage and was rejected," he said.

Vance said a second version of the proposal was more substantive and formed the basis of current discussions. “There was a second 10-point proposal that was much more reasonable, which was based on some back and forth between us, between the Pakistanis and between the Iranians. That is the 10-point proposal that the president was referencing in his Truth yesterday," he added.

He also referred to a third version circulating on social media, describing it as “even more maximalist" than the first draft.

Vance dismissed the origins of the initial proposal, calling it the work of “little more than a random yahoo in Iran," and criticised media coverage around it. However, similar claims about Iran’s position have been reported by multiple Iranian state media outlets and cited by international media, including CNN.

The remarks come amid ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran following a temporary ceasefire, with differing drafts and interpretations of proposals adding to uncertainty over the contours of a potential deal.

Iran Wants Lebanon Included In Deal

Iran has sought to link a ceasefire in Lebanon to its broader proposal for ending the conflict, with President Masoud Pezeshkian saying halting Israeli strikes there is a key condition in Tehran’s 10-point plan, according to state media.

His remarks came after Israel carried out its largest wave of strikes in Lebanon since hostilities resumed, including attacks in central Beirut. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said at least 182 people were killed and nearly 900 injured on Wednesday, with casualties expected to rise.

JD Vance To Lead Talks

The United States has rejected attempts to tie the Iran ceasefire to developments in Lebanon, with Vice President JD Vance saying the issue was not part of the agreement reached earlier.

Speaking to reporters in Hungary, Vance urged Tehran not to let the truce collapse over Lebanon, maintaining that the ceasefire terms did not include Israeli operations against Hezbollah.

The White House said Vance will lead the US delegation for talks with Iran starting Saturday in Islamabad, alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
