After Nitish Kumar stepped down as Bihar chief minister and moved to the Rajya Sabha, his party, Janata Dal (United), reshuffled key posts and announced its new national team. Nitish Kumar will continue as the party’s national president. What stands out, however, is that his son, Nishant Kumar, has not been given any role in the new setup.

Nishant’s absence is politically significant, suggesting that any talk of leadership succession within the party is, for now, not being formalised.

Nishant Kumar, who joined the JD(U) last month and is seen as a potential future face of the party, is expected to begin a public outreach campaign across Bihar. He is likely to launch a statewide yatra from May 3, which could mark the start of a more active political role. However, his exclusion from the formal organisational structure indicates that the party is keeping a clear line between political activity and official posts at this stage.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Kumar Jha has been reappointed working president, underlining his steady position within the party hierarchy. His return signals the leadership’s trust and a sense of continuity in organisational functioning.

At the structural level, the party has made a notable change by reducing the number of national vice presidents. Former MP Chandeshwar Prasad Chandravanshi has been named the sole national vice president, replacing the earlier system where multiple leaders held the post. The move is being seen as an attempt to streamline the leadership structure.

Senior leaders Manish Verma, Shyam Rajak and Ashok Chowdhary will continue as general secretaries. Their continuation suggests that experienced hands are being retained in key roles even as the hierarchy is reshaped.

The list of general secretaries also includes leaders such as Afaque Ahmad Khan and Ghulam Rasool Balyawi, reflecting the party’s effort to maintain a social and community balance, which has long been a core part of JD(U)’s political strategy.

Alok Kumar Suman has been appointed treasurer, while Rajeev Ranjan Prasad will take on the dual role of secretary and spokesperson, pointing to a focus on both organisational management and communication.

Overall, the new national team suggests JD(U) is looking to tighten its organisational structure while maintaining internal balance.
