Veteran actor Satish Shah, best known for his iconic portrayal of Indravadan Sarabhai in the classic sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, passed away yesterday at the age of 74 following kidney-related complications.
His death marks the end of an era in Indian comedy and television. A powerhouse of talent with a career spanning over four decades, Shah earned admiration for his effortless comic timing in films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Main Hoon Na as well as for his memorable roles in TV shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and Filmi Chakkar that made him a household name.Producer JD Majethia, who co-created the TV show Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, shared an emotional tribute, recalling both their personal bond and Shah’s generosity during the show’s early days.
“Satishji was my brother. I knew him before Sarabhai vs Sarabhai began. We always had him and Ratnaji in mind for the lead couple. When I told him our limited budget, he laughed and said, ‘I usually charge double.’ But he agreed to do the show because he believed in the show and wanted me to shine,” Majethia said.
He also remembered how, after the show’s success, he offered Shah a blank cheque in gratitude — a gesture Shah met with warmth and humility.
The Sarabhai gang used to stay in touch over messages on WhatsApp. “On our Sarabhai group, he and Ratna Pathak Shah were the live wires. Just a few days ago, he told me, ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to live long.’ Those words keep echoing in my mind. I’ve lost a dear friend and brother.”
