It all went down during the second round on Friday, September 12. Rose was already in rhythm with birdies on the 2nd and 4th holes. Then came the par-4 seventh. His approach looked perfect, tracking the flag, rolling straight toward the cup… and then heartbreak. The ball froze on the lip.Rose laughed in disbelief, acknowledging both the brilliance of the shot and the cruel twist of fate. Though the eagle escaped him by millimeters, he calmly tapped in for birdie.
The DP World Tour’s official X account shared the moment. “HOW?! 🤯 Justin Rose's approach at the 7th stays above ground, just,” the post said.
Where Does Rose stand on the leaderboard after near-eagle drama?
The missed eagle didn’t derail his round. After going bogey-free on Thursday, Rose followed up with eight birdies and just two bogeys in round two, keeping him in a tie for second alongside Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland. At suspension of play, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama held the lead after firing a dazzling 64.
Play will resume Saturday morning before the third round kicks off, setting the stage for a tense weekend finish at Wentworth.
Rose reflects on his performance and confidence going forward
Post-round, Rose kept things real in his press conference. He said his swing felt smoother than in Round 1 and that patience was key. “I think today was a much better day than yesterday,” Rose explained. “I felt like I came out and swung the club much, much better today. Nice, obviously the finish always makes dinner taste better at Wentworth.”With a win at the FedEx St. Jude already this season and a runner-up finish at the Masters, Rose is riding serious momentum. And even though his eagle got stuck on the edge, his Wentworth highlight might just be the viral moment of the tournament.
