NEW DELHI: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan officially filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu on Friday. The nomination took place at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of DMK president and chief minister MK Stalin and deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.Haasan’s nomination marks a significant milestone in his political career and is viewed as a strategic move ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.His Rajya Sabha candidature is through a seat allocated by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to its partner MNM, further strengthening the alliance between the two parties.Haasan’s nomination comes a day after the release of his latest movie, Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam.It is surrounded by recent controversy sparked by his remarks that “Kannada was born out of Karnataka,” which led to backlash in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The controversy has also affected the film’s release, with Thug Life not being screened in Karnataka.
