A recent case in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka has brought attention to how alternative punishments and public exposure can intersect in unexpected ways. What began as a corrective legal measure aimed at promoting civic responsibility has now taken a serious turn, raising concerns about the unintended consequences of such actions.

The incident involves Rakshith G, a resident of Sullia, who was booked for repeated traffic violations under the IMV Act. Taking note of the pattern of offences, the SCJ and JMFC Court of Sullia opted for a reformative approach instead of imposing only monetary penalties.

“The accused shall perform community service for a total of 15 days, from March 15, 2026, to March 29, 2026. This service involves standing at major junctions in Sullia town holding placards to raise public awareness about traffic safety and assisting in traffic management. Furthermore, a total fine of 3,000 shall be paid, and the individual’s driving license remains suspended for three months."

This court order was initially viewed as an innovative way to instil discipline and awareness among repeat offenders, while also contributing to public safety messaging.

From Compliance to Viral Attention

Following the directive, Rakshith began his community service on 15th March, standing at busy junctions with placards and assisting with traffic awareness. However, the public nature of the task quickly drew attention from passers-by.

Photos and videos of him carrying out the court mandated duty began circulating widely on social media platforms. The content soon went viral, attracting a mix of reactions, including commentary, memes and criticism. What was meant to be a local corrective exercise gradually turned into a widely discussed online subject, far beyond the town of Sullia.

Impact on Mental Health

According to sources close to the family, the sudden and widespread online exposure had a significant emotional impact on Rakshith. The constant circulation of his images and the accompanying public reactions reportedly left him feeling humiliated and distressed.

Late last night, the situation took a serious turn when Rakshith allegedly consumed poison. Family members found him in a critical state and immediately shifted him to a hospital in Sullia.

Doctors have confirmed that he is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit and remains under close observation. His condition continues to be monitored as medical teams provide necessary care.

Questions Over Public Shaming and Accountability

The incident has now shifted the focus from the intent of community service to the broader implications of public exposure and digital amplification. While such sentences aim to promote awareness and responsibility, the role of social media in turning them into viral spectacles has raised new concerns.

Authorities are yet to issue a statement on whether the community service order will continue. The case has sparked a wider conversation on balancing reformative justice with the need to protect individual dignity in an increasingly connected world.
