The S. Bangarappa Foundation and the S. Bangarappa Vichara Vedike will jointly organised a day-long programme in Shivamogga’s Sorab taluk to mark the 93rd birth anniversary of former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa on October 26, Sunday. The programme will be held at Bangaradhama, a memorial for Bangarappa.
Venugopal Naik, president of the Bangarappa Vichara Vedike, in a press conference here on Friday said that the organisers would felicitate achievers from different fields with the ‘Bangara’ award on this occasion. This year, the foundation have chosen retired Kannada professor and writer Kale Gowda Nagavara, retired IPS officer L. Revanasiddaiah, folk artist Radhabai Madar, and theatre artist Jevargi Rajanna for the honour.
The event will begin with a seminar on Bangarappa’s contributions to society. Mr. Nagavara and poets S.G. Siddaramaiah and H.L. Pushpa will take part in the seminar.
Minister for Food and Civil Supplies K.H. Muniyappa, former minister and Congress leader R.V. Deshpande, Labour Minister Santosh Lad, and others are scheduled to take part in the award presentation ceremony. Madhu Bangarappa, Minister for School Education and son of Bangarappa, will preside over the programme, Mr. Naik said.
Bangaradhama, the venue for the event, was inaugurated in 2023 and is spread over 1.25 acres. The State government recently declared it a tourist place.
The memorial consists of a well-maintained garden, a clock tower, a walk path, an amphitheatre, etc. H.R. Kiran, who works for the foundation, said that 250 to 300 people visit the memorial every day. “People who come to see the Jog Falls take a break at Sorab and visit the memorial. It has been attracting a significant number of tourists,” he said. Mr. Kiran added that the memorial had been built and maintained by the foundation, headed by Mr. Madhu.
Bangarappa represented the Sorab constituency in the State Assembly from 1967 to 1992 and served as the Chief Minister from 1990 to 1992. He passed away in 1992.
