The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is on the brink of a major internal restructuring, with party president K Chandrashekar Rao reportedly preparing to expel his daughter Kalvakuntla Kavitha.

Kavitha, who heads Telangana Jagruthi, has increasingly clashed with the party’s leadership due to her persistent criticism of both the organisation and its senior members.

Party insiders reveal that KCR has been meticulously documenting Kavitha’s actions, which he deems detrimental to the party – drawing comparisons to Lord Krishna patiently cataloguing 100 transgressions before slaying Shishupala.

Despite their familial ties, sources suggest KCR believes party discipline and integrity supersede personal relationships. With BRS Working President KT Rama Rao currently abroad, the expulsion is expected to be formally announced upon his return.

The conflict escalated after Kavitha sent a letter to KCR, sparking internal tensions. Subsequent allegations that she had explored merging the BRS with the BJP further exacerbated the divide.

The situation intensified when she publicly questioned KTR’s leadership during media interactions. Her remarks at the Telangana Jagruthi office inauguration, where she described BRS and Jagruthi as KCR’s “two eyes", were widely interpreted as asserting her independence from the party. The scale of the Jagruthi office launch further fuelled speculation about her forging a separate political path.

Despite these internal challenges, many BRS leaders remain optimistic about the party’s prospects. They believe that growing public dissatisfaction with the ruling Congress government in Telangana – arising from unmet promises, stalled development projects, and inadequate welfare implementation – could facilitate the BRS’s return to power. With municipal elections approaching, including the crucial Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, party members are confident in their ability to mobilise voter support.

However, many grassroots workers are dismayed that Kavitha, instead of supporting the party during a challenging period, is now perceived as openly rebellious. They believe her actions are undermining the leadership when unity is paramount.

Political analyst Martha Subrahmanyam told News18 that the party is facing one of its most turbulent periods. “Controversies are piling up, and the government is under legal scrutiny — even KCR has received notices from the Kaleshwaram Commission. In this context, Kavitha’s behaviour is not just irritating but seriously damaging. KCR has always acted swiftly against dissent. Why should this be any different? Would he remain silent if a BC or SC leader had acted this way? Isn’t this clearly a case of indiscipline?"

KCR, known for his firm grip on party affairs, now faces the difficult task of consolidating the organisation and restoring its political relevance. While he may operate behind the scenes, all major decisions – including appointments and dismissals – require his direct approval. Insiders say the leadership believes Kavitha’s conduct has not only eroded party discipline but also provoked KCR’s anger. Despite her public declarations of loyalty, neither KCR nor the senior leadership appears convinced.

Following BRS’s defeat in the last Assembly elections, KCR’s strategic silence and behind-the-scenes manoeuvres have been credited with stabilising the party. Leaders like KTR, Harish Rao, and other second-tier functionaries have been active in rebuilding the party’s base. However, Kavitha’s defiance is now seen as a significant impediment to this recovery.

According to senior BRS sources, KCR will not hesitate to take decisive action if he believes the party’s future is threatened. “If he feels someone – even his own daughter or son – is harming the party, he doesn’t spare them. He takes tough decisions when necessary," said a senior leader close to the BRS chief.

Kavitha is also widely considered a key factor in the party’s poor performance in the recent elections. Her arrest in the Delhi liquor scam, and the opposition’s labelling of her as the “Liquor Queen", considerably tarnished BRS’s public image. While KCR remained restrained during that period, political observers believe he may be less inclined to do so now.

With all indications pointing towards her imminent departure, it appears Kavitha’s expulsion from BRS is a matter of time.
