Kerala HC proposes constitution of Ashtamudi Local Wetland Authority

The Kerala High Court has proposed the constitution of the Ashtamudi Local Wetland Authority under the supervision of the State Wetland Authority to protect and conserve the Ashtamudi wetland.

Expressing concern at the condition of the Ashtamudi wetland, the court said it was under threat from pollution and degradation, especially due to indiscriminate discharge of sewage and solid waste from houses and commercial establishments.

The Principal Secretary, Environment department, can finalise the composition of the proposed committee, and recommend an expert each from wetland ecology, hydrology, fisheries, landscape planning and socio-economics, and two from wetland management, preferably having expertise in the area of Ashtamudi wetland, it added.
