Election officials have so far received 2.18 lakh applications for inclusion of names in the electoral roll after the Election Commission of India (EC) published the draft roll on December 23 under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Kerala.
The total number includes 1,77,718 applications filed through Form 6, and 40,383 applications through Form 6A. Form 6 is for new voters, while Form 6A applies to the overseas electors among Indian citizens, according to data released by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (Kerala).
Prior to the publication of the draft roll, 3,72,383 Form 6 applications and 32,925 Form 6A applications had been filed.
Apart from these, election officials have also received 932 Form 7 applications, which pertain to objections against the inclusion or deletion of names in the roll.
Meanwhile, the hearings in connection with the ‘no mapping’ electors - voters who could not be linked to the 2002 SIR list - has begun in earnest in the State. The ‘no mapping’ electors number a little over 19.32 lakh. As per the revised schedule for Kerala, the claims and objections period lasts till January 22. The notice phase (hearings and verification) ends on February 14. The final list will be published on February 21.
The draft electoral roll published on December 23 had a little over 2.54 crore voters in all. This included 1.3 crore female voters, 1.23 crore male voters and 280 transgender voters. When the draft roll was published, 24.08 lakh names had been removed, drawing the ire of political parties in the State.
These names were included in the Absent, Shifted, Dead (ASD) list published alongside the draft roll. Of this, 6.45 lakh were listed as ‘untraceable/absent,’ 8.16 lakh as ‘permanently shifted,’ while 1.6 lakh are in the ‘others’ category, which includes people who reportedly declined to accept or return the enumeration forms. The list also had 6.49 lakh dead voters and 1.36 lakh duplicated names.
