The woman, Raseena from Dharmadam, was found dead at her home on Tuesday.
A 40-year-old woman in Kerala’s Kannur has died by suicide after allegedly being publicly mortified by a gang of people for speaking to her male friend.
The woman, Raseena from Dharmadam, was found dead at her home on Tuesday. She is survived by husband and three minor children.
Three people allegedly belonging to Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) — the political wing of outlawed right wing Popular Front of India — were arrested in connection with the incident. They have been identified as V C Mubasheer, 28, K A Faisal, 34 and V K Rafnas, 24, all hailing from Dharmadam village.
According to Pinarayi Station House Officer Inspector Bavish V S, the gang allegedly found Raseena speaking to a male friend in public and questioned her,
“She happened to be a relative of one of the arrested people. The gang questioned the woman and her friend, summoned the woman’s family and insulted her,” the officer said.
They allegedly then took the male friend to their office and subjected him to a “mob trial”, taking away his digital gadgets. They have been remanded in judicial custody.
“We had recovered a suicide note from the woman, who said she was taking the extreme over the humiliation she had faced. We are looking into the involvement of more people,” Bavish said.
